Qld: Police counselled after fatal shooting

BRISBANE, April 10 AAP - Police officers are receiving counselling after a man involved
in a 19-hour stand-off in a southeast Queensland farmhouse was shot dead.

Members of the Special Emergency Response Team fatally shot the 29-year-old man at
11am (AEST) yesterday when he allegedly threatened them at a roadblock after fleeing from
the house.

A police spokeswoman said the police homicide squad, ethical standards command and
the independent Crime and Misconduct Commission were investigating the incident.

She said police counselling was a routine procedure in this type of incident.

The man's death is the third fatality in police sieges since October last year.

Officers had arrived at the property at Cinnabar, west of Gympie, at 3.45pm (AEST)
on Thursday to find a man holding a gun.

He fired shots at them, damaging a police vehicle where officers had been sitting,
and forcing them to retreat from the house.

Police said that when fleeing the scene, the man encountered a police roadblock, where
he threatened officers.

They responded by firing several times, wounding him, police said earlier.

Attempts were made to give him first aid and a helicopter was called in to airlift
him to hospital but he died at the scene.

A police spokeswoman said the man had been alone in the farmhouse during the siege.
