Date set for Croatian presidential election

Croatians will vote on Dec. 27 to elect a new president.

The winner will replace President Stipe Mesic, who has served a maximum of two terms as the country's third president since it gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.

The presidency is largely a ceremonial post, but it also serves as commander in chief of the country's military.
